How to choose a freelance closer

Choose a freelance closer against the work you need done: define the offer and leads, use the same short sales scenario with each candidate, verify relevant examples and agree on reporting and authority before the first customer call.

Define the mission before reviewing profiles

Write down who supplies leads, what counts as a qualified appointment, which steps the closer owns, the offer and price, permitted discounts, expected follow-up and the handover after a sale. If lead generation is part of the job, say so explicitly. A strong closer for inbound discovery calls may not fit a prospecting-heavy mission. Start with the scope of the role and prepare the one-page offer brief.

Ask for evidence that fits this offer

Ask each candidate to describe an analogous offer, lead source, sales cycle and their exact contribution. Seek a redacted call outline, follow-up message or case account they are authorised to share. A claimed conversion rate without lead quality, sample size, time period and attribution is hard to interpret. Do not ask for confidential prospect recordings or customer data as routine proof.

Run the same short scenario

Fictional exercise: a prospect for a €2,000 B2B service says, “We already have a provider, and your price seems high.” Give each candidate the same brief and ten minutes to respond. Observe whether they ask what is missing with the current provider, clarify the buying process, explain only approved claims, avoid an unauthorised discount, and agree on a next step. A role play tests one interaction; it does not prove future conversion.

Compare decisions with a documented rubric

Illustrative comparison rubric
CriterionEvidence to record
Offer comprehensionCan explain scope, limits and price accurately.
DiscoveryAsks relevant questions before presenting a solution.
Claim disciplineUses approved proof; flags unknowns and seeks approval.
Follow-up and handoverDocuments outcome, next action and owner.
Availability and economicsCan cover the expected volume and agrees on a workable fee basis.

Apply the same rubric to all candidates. Record an observation and its evidence, not a personality label. If two candidates perform similarly, a small paid pilot with defined calls and a review date can test the workflow; do not infer a market-standard pilot length from this example.

Check references and agree on the working rules

With the candidate's permission, ask a relevant past client what the closer actually owned, how feedback and handover worked, and why the mission ended. Agree in writing on access to tools, confidential information, reporting, price authority, invoicing and how a sale is attributed. Use the payment guide to compare retainer, commission and mixed terms. This guide does not determine whether a specific relationship legally qualifies as independent work.

If you process candidate data or use recorded calls, limit collection and access, tell people how their information is used, and check the applicable rules. The CNIL recruitment guide concerns employment recruitment in France; it is a useful privacy reference but does not automatically settle every freelance arrangement. An anonymised written scenario usually needs less personal data than a real prospect call.

Prepare a defined mission

ClosR presents a workflow for connecting companies with freelance closers. Set the selection criteria and mission terms yourself before inviting anyone into a sales process.
